Barbara Marion Ajello died from brain cancer on May 4, 2013, surrounded by family and friends at her home in Fallbrook. Barbara was born on Dec. 9, 1939, in Boston, Mass. to Barnett and Eileen (Wall) Goldman. She grew up in Dallas, Texas and Arcadia, Calif. and graduated from UCLA in 1962 with a BA in Spanish and a masters degree in education. She met her husband of 47 years, Joseph M. Ajello, at a dance in 1965. They were married in North Hollywood in 1966. Their son, Michael, was born in 1971. They moved to Fallbrook in 2004, after living in Arcadia for 32 years. She and Joe enjoyed travelling together all over the world for their 48 years together, including living a year in Paris, France, and summers in Mexico and Germany through their careers. Barbara taught Spanish for the LA Unified School system. During her career, while teaching in Arcadia, Barbara was selected as Teacher of the Year. She was considered thoughtful, caring, considerate, and cheerful. The world was a better place with her presence having touched the lives of over 1,000 students. Later, retiring from teaching after 30 years, she became a certified physical instructor at 24-Hour Fitness and Club Paradise. Like her mother, Eileen Goldman, who was active in the Fallbrook community (a Citizen of the Year, a director of the Fallbrook Hospital, and founder of the Fallbrook Hospice and Blood Bank), Barbara spent innumerable hours sharing her time, her experiences and her vibrant personality. She was active in furthering the goals of such organizations as AAUW, mentors of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program that assists high school girls in preparing for college, serving as its director in 2007-2008. She also participated in Rally for Children (sponsors of an annual spring Arts in the Park community event attracting 2,000 Fallbrook children and families), as well as the Angel Shop. She was preceded in death by her parents and only son, Michael Ajello, who also died of cancer. Barbara is survived by her husband, Joseph M. Ajello, PhD (a Senior Research Scientist, California Institute of Technology, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory); three sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law. Her larger than life presence will be greatly missed by her family, many friends, and acquaintances.A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Hilltop Center for Spiritual Living, 331 East Elder, Fallbrook, Calif. Two graduate level fellowships are being established in her name for brain cancer research at UCLA and UCSD, as well as a graduate level fellowship in space physics at the University of Colorado. A donation to the AAUW Scholarship Endowment Fund for an AVID Scholarship to be established in Barbaras name can be sent to Morgan Bishop, Program Officer, Legacy Endowment, The Community Foundation, P.
